GameTrailers Is Trying To Bring A Sword To A Gun Fight PDF E-mail
( 89 Votes )
Written by: darkpower
This is Jazzking2001, owner of this site. I need to say something to the people that read this article. We do NOT have issues with the GT review score of 9.3 for Uncharted 2 at all. The issue is the reasoning BEHIND the scoring of the game.

It's official. I get it. GameTrailers never liked the PS3. But did they really need to try to hide it? First the comparison videos that have the word “controversy” skewed all over them, then the Dblock commentary (if you could call it that) about the 360 being better than the PS3 because of the controller (who, by the way, was a VIDEO EDITOR FOR THE SITE), and now a review for the upcoming Uncharted 2. Yes, we know, 9.3/10 is a far, FAR cry from a 3/10. Not many games get that high of a score. But many reviewers do this when defending their reviews when the score for the games they reviewed are brought into question.

It happened with Chris Buffa over his Metal Gear Solid 4 review over at GameDaily, and it happened here too. It's that many reviewers who see their scores being called out defend it in the pretense, whether it's intentional or not, that the doubters are those that are upset about the final score alone. It's clear that it's the context of the review is what is causing the uproar, and GT's Editor in Chief Shane Satterfield made the mistake, too.

And this time, he decided to bring a sword to a gun fight.

First, before people label me here, let me assure you that I know I've developed quite the reputation here with my last two articles, Tough Love for Microsoft and my calling out of XBox 360 Rebate: Not All It's Cracked Up To Be (both of which I still stand behind, by the way, despite fanboys trying to harass Jazzking about my “idiocy” about them). Not going to pretend that every word I say will be put under a microscope. And, in reality, I hope you people do that, because when people try to defend their reviews by bringing up games that did nothing creative to make your point that something else wasn't, then you hurt your credibility. In this case, the microscope will make you see that some people should not be reviewing games.

Such is the case with Shane Satterfield. I've watched his 10 minute video review (warning that there are some spoilers in the review, something that Satterfield also failed to apologize for in his "defense", and even Gamespot, another one of the media whores, had to apologize for in ITS review of UC2), and yes, he did give the game one of the better reviews that GT could give given the site's apparent bias against the system it is on. In fact, one of the only things that they said was negative were the controls (which we won't know about until we gamers get the game in our hands), a smack on the original Uncharted being too short (maybe if you don't count the trophies that were patched in after), and, of course, the “originality”. This is where Satterfield got some heat. How can a game that not much negative things were said of it got a 9.3?

That led to the defense on the Invisible Walls podcast, and one that the Examiner summed up perfectly. This is where my personal problem with his defense lies. First, the sword he brought to the fight: Gears of War. The guns that THEY brought? Sports games that are released every year. Or how about the Guitar Hero games or the upcoming Modern Warfare 2? Satterfield didn't exactly get what was being compared. As far as Gears goes, he didn't really go into detail about why he thought GoW was so original in comparison to Uncharted 2. Granted, he has his own opinions, but when you fail to support your opinions with some substance to make us believe that you actually thought that opinion through, you make us suspicious. I am not doubting that there was something he saw in those games that WAS original (the only thing that he brought up as being in GoW2 in the actual video review was the “Horde” mode), but he needed to bring that up to be more creditable.

Furthermore, he also brings up Super Mario Galaxy. It's an awesome game, I do agree. However, and I have to thank someone bringing this up to me, Rachet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal? came up with the upside down platforming concept before SMG did.

Finally, and I had some issues with this, he said the following things:

And again, I’ve said it a million times, the game is freaking incredible. The last line in the review says: ‘go buy the game. If you have a PS3, go freaking buy it.’ What more can I say? But at the same time I cannot sleight the other games that did go above and beyond and did take a risk.

And that’s what Uncharted 2 doesn’t do. There are no risks associated with that game at all. They played it completely safe. They took things that they knew were accepted and people loved and build it into one game. And that’s fine, there’s nothing wrong with that. But you can’t expect a score of a 9.8 or a 9.5 and higher if you’re doing something like that.

Now, take into consideration that he said in the original video review that Naughty Dog “took the concepts and made them better”. That's IS a form of originality. That's why people can get patents for inventions that actually improve on another's already patented idea. You make a new twist on an old concept. This is contradicting what he said in his response to something.

But what Satterfield failed to get is the whole concept of why people were mad. Opinions are opinions. Everyone's entitled to them. No one is saying he had no right to say that they were faults if he thought they were. This is a flaw with all reviewers when they have to defend their scores. They think it's just a bunch of fanboys wanting a 10/10 or else, regardless of what faults that reviewer may see. The 9.3 is fine as long as you're saying things to justify you giving such a score to any game. This is the same thing that Chris Buffa ran into, and what his defenders tried to say about his MGS4 review.

The detractors were, according to them, a bunch of PS3 fanboys ready to pounce on an imperfect score. I don't think I have to even say anything about his review (Google it), but his response to the controversy just made it worse, with him claiming that Kojima was given a “free pass” by reviewers. That's not how you get the fires put out. In fact, you just pour gas on them. The reviewers spend more time trying to row up the so-called “fanboys” that called them out instead of trying to explain their score further. While Satterfield was hardly as bad as Buffa was, you could tell he wasn't happy that he was called out.

That's the thing with being a reviewer: you need to take the criticisms like a gamer. Not everyone will agree (hell, even reviewers with disagree with each other). Those that are willing to stand behind their score are commended for their bravery, but at the same time, you need to be defending them for the RIGHT reasons, not just because you have a bone to pick with fanboys.

Though with Satterfield, it's a special case. There's another reason why gamers are suspicious of his score. It's what I made apparent at the beginning of this article: GameTrailers has a history of not being kind to the PS3. Take the switch up controversy surrounding the recent Wolverine game that came out. They showed a 360 clip on the PS3 side, and then when called on it, did a quick stealth edit of the video and then claim that they did nothing wrong.

That goes on top of the many other issues surrounding the side-by-side comparison videos. From the alleged sabotaging of the PS3 version side to not running the PS3 version at the same resolutions as they run the 360 side. This coupled with the Dblock issue is reason enough to see where the suspicions are rooted from. It would've been nice of Satterfield brought some of this stuff up, but sadly, he didn't. Maybe as little as some reassurance that no bias was shown here would've been enough.

But, of course, instead, we're left with the usual thought: the bias about Sony's console in the mainstream media is continuing to be though of by the gaming public. More and more are picking up on this, and there are less and less people ready to shout the label of “SDF” member to anyone who calls the MSM out on things like this. Maybe I was too hard on Satterfield in the beginning when I said that he shouldn't be allowed to review games. He needs to be educated more, I know that. But him assuring that he wasn't trying to tote a company line could've helped out, and if he really does have a 360 bias that he's flooding throughout the site, then people really do need to ask questions.

Take this as a lesson to any reviewer, though: be ready for people to disagree. Every gamer has their vices, and every gamer has their turn offs, and you will not know what they are until you actually see what they play. You're never going to have everyone disagree, and if you are just going to use a defense to piss off some fanboys that you got annoyed by, I got four words for you:

This is Jazzking2001, owner of this site. I need to say something to the people that read this article. We do NOT have issues with the GT review score of 9.3 for Uncharted 2 at all. The issue is the reasoning BEHIND the scoring of the game.

  • TopCat  - haha

Horde wasn't original. It's pretty much Rainbow Six: Vegas' Terrorist hunt. You shouldn't deduct or add originality points unless you do your research.

When entertainment becomes business it's the art and fans that lose. :/

  • Maniac  - Started with vegas?

Vegas is far from the first Rainbow Six with T.Hunt. It's been around for years, you know Rainbow did enjoy a fair bit of success being a realistic shooter on the PC.

Horde involves waves of Locust, as does the similar mode in Uncharted 2. Beyond that the similarities get fuzzy, when I look at UC2 I see a completely different game from the first UC and Gears. That's enough for me.

9.3 is a HIGH (who complains about a 4 star movie review?) score and it certainly hasn't detracted my excitement from playing Uncharted 2. But if you don't like Gametrailers and it's business practices DON'T go there, bias or not if you feel you have beef don't give them the hits.

  • Sigh  - Sigh

It's official. I get it. GameTrailers never liked the PS3.

I stopped reading after that first sentence. Idiot.

  • truth

I agree with some of your points

  • Facepalm  - ....

I'm not buying this game because I only buy 9.8's and above, everything else is garbage.

I've got to admit, when I saw that Gametrailers were forced to defend giving a game a 9.3 because of fanboys I thought "That is the lowest thing they have ever done." Even the ma*s down voting of games on review sites wasn't as bad as b*tching over a 9.3

Luckily you managed to step in and take the crying fanbaby crown with this article though.

  • supra5mge  - snob

"I'm not buying this game because I only buy 9.8's and above, everything else is garbage."
That is the single most stupid fu**ing thing i have ever heard. Wow, you get douchebag of the year with that comment! Dumbf*ck

  • Josh  - Game trailers are bias

Yeah game trailers is very bias, The things he said was ridiculous, But he still gave it a good score a 9.3 is on;y a .2 off.

  • Joker

I agree with you on this..
Gears of War 2 is full of originality and even worse with online lag feast, yet it received a 9.5! It's a joke that he himself even brought GeoW into this.

Shane Satterfield should really step down being a reviewer.

  • bla*s

Uncharted 2 didn't exist when Gears of War 2 came out. You can't compare a game that's not even made yet to one that is.

And you believe Dblock? Why can't anybody get sarcasm these days........

  • Mike  - GearsOfWar2

I went back to GT to watch the GOW2 review! HAHA OMG you guys have to watch it and listen to what he says...he leaves ahole lotta details bout the game. The game is only bout 8 hrs long but worth every penny, Uncharted 2 is 12-14 hours?? HMMMM

"if you played the first game there is nothing earth shattering"

"fairly similar to the first, just boosted graphics"

haha please someone watch an lemme know if they catch the same garbage...im not a fanboy i have had 3 360 redring on me and i just cant stand/afford another to break on me.

  • Dion  - Good article!

Well written! I agree a lot!

  • Mike

    GT Reviews

    GOW 1 - 9.1
    Uncharted 1 - 8.9

    GOW 2 - 9.5
    Uncharted 2 - 9.3

Both a 2 point spread HHHMMMM!!!!

yet they called Uncharted 1 in the Uncharted 2 review "Hands down the best game on any console"

  • Guy  - This "article" is probably a new low on the inte

Not only this site reeks of PS3 fanboyism, this opinion piece sets a new low on internet fanboy rants, even among the N4G ma*s stupidity.

Uncharted 2, as goog as it gets, has nothing original in it. Check the review again and ask someone to translate it for you, because it has a lot criticizing the game (stealth element, AI, automatic platforming elements, etc.)
The game surpa*ses the first game in all areas, but NOT OTHER GAMES it copies from - That's what you fail to understand (That's what the review says, not my opinion)

Your patent comment ("people get patents for inventions that actually improve on another's already patented idea.";) especially got me LMAO. You're as clueless about patents as a 16 years old girl, aren't you? People don't get patents for apeing other people's patent, they get their a*s sued for doing that. They only get a patent if their invention makes a NON TRIVIAL advancement over previous patents, but Uncharted 2 is as trivial as it gets.

  • Nevets973

Actually, getting a patent on an already existing idea is not only legal, it is common practice. It is seen in almost every piece of technology we have today.

  • Anonymous  - not so true

you only get the patent if it was YOUR patent in the first place. you can't just plagiarize and tweak someone else's work and get a brand new patent

  • Anonymous

I agree with you! I usally don't like GT reviews, they tend to only be good things about games which does not justify the score they get. It's quite annoying!

  • Anonymous  - C'mon people

This is honestly one of the stupidest articals I've read in a while on the net.

I am a PS3 owner who has Uncharted 2: Among Thieves pre-ordered. I also watch IW every week and am astounded how many of the people who b*tch about IW don't even watch it.

This artical has very little thought put into it and it shows. And I know that I'm going to be thumbed down but honestly don't give a crap for one simple reason. Telling the truth.

If people want to b*tch about the "bad" review score for U2 go here http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?prev=hp&hl=no&js=y&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gamer.no%2Farticle.php%3FarticleId%3D23116&sl=no&tl=en&history_state0=&swap=1

Ow and lets not forget. The game got a 9.3, so quit feeling so damn a**raped for crying out loud.

  • kaspa

stop crying like a little b!tch, GT gave uncharted 2 a great review, im sick of little b!tches like you wingeing over scores.

    stupid fanb!tch.

  • ED

was you talking to me dude?

  • kaspa

i was talking to the fangirl baby wah wah b!tch that wrote this POS article.

  • Zonde  - a@ Mike

and both uncharted games had more than the gears games

  • bg93  - THANKYOU!

I've had a long day so THANKYOU for giving me something I can relax and agree with! I think is BS how reviewers take off for originality. The only reason I see this as acceptable is when it becomes stale, like most FPSs, but from what I've played in the MP and from the first game, it has a very unique feel that relies on a tactical, yet cautious approach to firefights. With the added platforming options and versatility of the levels then I don't know why GT had such a problem. If it feels original, why does it matter if it is? Wow, this is friggin epic! I love this gam- oh wait, Gears of War had this combat system an- wait, that platforming looks like Tomb Raider. Whoa gunna get points off for blending a genre there! Bull Sh*t.

  • king  - unreal

a review is an opinion.. if you don't like it.. well, that's your opinion..everybody has one.. it's amazing to me to hear people criticize someone's opinion and try to present the argument that somehow they know better.. why should anyone listen to you?? do u have a doctorate in reviewology?? if not, it is u who needs to shut the f*** up..

  • Anonymous

You detest this review, though you just implied that it's wrong to criticize people's opinions.

    ...

    What?

  • Eboc

    @ TopCat - haha

Gears of war came out before Vegas..

  • GT IS LOSERS

People who don't agree with this article probably got laid Shanie, or they are just plain blind. If you think that every reviewer opinions need to be accepted, then perhaps we all should start creating sites, reviewing games with our bias opinions and still get a pa*s!

I did some review on odst giving a 1/10, I also did a forza3 review and gave it a 1/10 for being original from 1,2! I guess my review can be accepted just like Shanie.

  • Geoffrey Prout  - Finally someone speaks up!

I'm getting sick of the b*tching and moaning about fanboyism..i REALLY am.. But, the writer states all valid points in this article, all the while never taking a side between the PS3 and 360...Here are the facts: If you own both consoles..most likely you aren't a fanboy..but if you can only afford a particular console, you beat the other to the ground..and that isn't very fair. It is quite dumb when a reviewer gives a score, and doesn't give enough solid evidence to why they scored it so low.. I know U2 hasn't come out yet, but I've played the first one, and if it's any better than its predecessor, we are looking at 9.8 and up...If you look at reviewers who gave the game lower, you'll notice the dumb a*s comments they'll say.. "we aren't gonna give uncharted 2 a perfect score like sony's puppet reviewers".. I mean come on...does that not have xbox fanboy written all over it! Either way, I love my ps3 and am anxiously awaiting Uncharted 2 regardless of the buttheads that review it!

  • Holden  - Wow are you joking

?Your entire comment right there screams that your a PS3 fanboy. Especially the part where you blatantly say where you love your PS3. You have not played Uncharted 2 therefore you have no say if its a "9.8 or up." Every statement you made was just pure speculation and based only off of your biased Playstation fanboy nature. If only you had the ability to think rationally.

  • xino  - Mr

    Gametrailers are just Xbots:/

Did you see how hard they bashed Ninja Blade?

  • Anonymous

ninja blade was on both systems dumba*s

  • asdcxz321  - ewwwwwww

Ninja Blade, HUGE Ninja Gaiden ripoff, even the characters name screams ripoff. Ken=Ryu's father's original name from the NES ver.

  • Mamma

Ghost Recon 1 & 2 came out before both Vegas and Gears. And the horde mode in GOW is copied from Ghost Recon's many modes eg.mission, battle, defend, firefight, etc. The chainsaw that some reviewers rave about in GOW was done in Doom (the original FPS) and the game is good but the game can be glitchy when trying to go into cover at times. God damn ignorant GOW fanboys stop pretending nothing else was before GOW!

The thing is if you become biased reviewer you should get a different job. It's their responsibility to give consumers and honest report. A biased reporter could sell crap and that is misleading the public. It's like a salesman bigging up a crap motor. If reviewers don't want to be professional they should stick to blogs - just where thoughtless opinions belong. This is another sad day for journalism. Tens of thousands have already given up on edge-online for their bias towards M$ and dishonest reviews, this will probably appply to gametrailers as well. I know in future not to trust GT anymore. Thanks for raising the facts in this article.

  • Holden  - Your a moron PS3 fanboy

So basically every dumb a*s PS3 fanboy is crying because GameTrailers posts a well thought out honest review of a game instead of just slapping a 10/10 on it like every PS3 biased website. Great. If any of you have actually played Uncharted 2 and try to resist being a homo fanboy for 5 minutes you would actually see that Uncharted 2 does nothing original, it just does every old thing better than everyone else.

  • Noc  - Holden you make no sense

Every PS3 fanboy is not crying out. It's pretty obvious what every non x-box fanboy is crying out though.

They're crying out that the whole idea of "docking" points from originality is completely, utterly, totally INCONSISTENT.

    I'll take 2 examples: GoW2 and Uncharted 2.

My question: What was "original" about GoW2 that they didn't do in Gears 1?

    - Brumak riding
    - floating eye-ball thingie riding
(in other words 2 difference types of "vehicles";)
    - flamethrower
    - ADDITIONAL MULTIPLAYER MODE aka "horde"
    - fighting giant monster in a lake.

Please feel free to add if I've forgotten something.

So the thing is...what the hell is original about that?!? Halo 2 had more vehicles than Halo. And Halo 3 had more than Halo 2.

Yet there was no b*tching or whining about originality and docking points because of it. Unless GT thinks a Brumak is different from a Warthog which is different from whatever other vehicle in the Halo universe.

My point: Reviewers are consistently being INCONSISTENT about the concept of "originality". Ppl look at comments about GoW2 and if I sum it up, what I get is "Just as good as Gears 1 and adds Horde mode and an actual (weaka*s) SP plotline".

So then why is it that when U2 is reviewed, instead of it being reviewed comparatively to Drake's Fortune, it gets reviewed against Gears 2 and every other "platformer, shooter, 3rd person action, tomb raider-clone" out there??

Why wasn't Arkham Asylum reviewed like Gears? It had reticule aiming, 3rd person platforming action, a "horde" mode of its own (challenge rooms), and even a "corner peek" cover mode.

I hope I'm getting something across here...

I don't know what U2 has, but I know it has a multiplayer mode PERIOD. I'm sure it will have at least one DIFFERENT vehicle mode from the previous game, it will have different weapons, it will have a GREAT story again, and its production values will be even better than the first one.

So it's funny why ppl complain that while that may be good enough for something like the Gears franchise, when it comes to something like Uncharted, that type of stuff just isn't good enough anymore.

  • Anonymous

    ya.. you forgot new:
    multiplayer mechanics (tweaks to cover)
new uses for grenades (setting mines)
    stuns from smoke
tweaks to old modes (meatflag, etc.)

not saying the online wasn't amazingly broken at times, just saying you need to think about what you say is new. and Gears' cover system was actually innovative at the time because short of stealth games before it you could charge in guns blazing, Gears' made you want to take cover.

  • Cape

"Holden - your a moron PS3 fanboy"; you are fu**ing idiot. If Uncharted 2 has no originality and that is why it got underrated, then why did Halo 3 get a 9.8, if all it is, is another first person shooter with vehicles. Tell me that's original you dipshit. No you can't because the fact is Halo 3 is more so "unoriginal" than Uncharted 2 because all it is is first person shooting and vehicles, whereas uncharted 2 is puzzles, stealth, platforming, cover. all elements which are used less in games than first person shooting and vehicles. So shut up and get back to fingering your 360.

  • vvstebb09

I really dont understand why all these reviewers are saying that uncharted 2 is not original. I dont know many shooters (definitely in multiplayer)where you can do all the stuff you can do in uncharted. Yea sure maybe those things have been in other games before, but not many games have put them all together and done it as well as naughty dog has. But even if this game wasnt original, i think if a game is fun to play, has a great story, and is just amazing all around it should get a high score. Now i know that 9.3 is a very good score, its just when i look back to games that have scored higher its kind of sad. And that was probably the longest comment i have ever written lol

  • Anonymous  - Watch the review again

Looks like you missed many of the game's flaws in the review: the story is unoriginal, the game is extremely linear, no exploration whatsoever, the platforming sequences are too easy since jumping is pretty much automatic, stealth segments are a joke due to the game's "moronic AI" (which they demonstrate clearly in the review; he basically walks right up to an enemy's field of view and isn't caught), the puzzles aren't challenging and are just "mere speed bumps" in the action, the game has "sluggish controls" at times, there's no control over what moves you pull off in hand-to-hand combat (basically button-mashing), the multiplayer perks system is a straight ripoff of Call of Duty 4, horde is similar to the one in Gears of War, and - although graphics are nice - the game does nothing new gameplay-wise.

9.3 is about as high as a game can get considering the aforementioned points. GT was able to look past the pretty presentation and gave a very fair review of a game that doesn't innovate, but polishes what has already been done in previous games.

  • kpdc1  - GoW not origional!

the getaway on ps2 was an openworld 3rd person shooter with a coversystem! and im sure there where games before that that had cover systems! the only origional thing gears did was add a chain saw to a gun, and without the chainsaw the gun sucks! the accuracy sucks the power sucks etc.
i own gears1&2 and uncharted and will be getting Uncharted2 when it comes out!

  • cell989

GameTrailers are a bunch of xbot droids, who can only serve their rightful masters- Bill Gates and Jay Allard. Shane, just been another puppet had to do what was "right" or else he would have been demoted back to "fanboy" status, thus earning the name of "xbot".

    Definition of xbot:
A middle age man with the ability to blindly support and defend the xbox360 at all cost, no matter how ridiculous or stupid his arguments might be.

In other words: A fu**ing turd who relies on trolling the internet to spew buckets full of shit, only to gain credibility.
e: Chris Buffa and now Shane Shatterfield.

  • Read This "Anonymous"

Well now i watched their review. You have a point with what you said, however the "moronic AI" seems to have only been talked about by GT. Other review sites have said that the AI is great. But GT was just looking really hard for one flaw in the game that they were able to come across this one guy. A linear path is not always a bad thing, infact in this game it is said that it is good because it does not make you want to put your controller down. Another thing is that GT said "the controls are sluggish" infact i believe that according to a majority of review sites the controls are one of the best things about this game due to their responsiveness, unlike a game such as gears where the controls usually lag quite often, but you don't see them talking about all the glitches and "sluggish controls" in their gears of war reviews do you. isn't it funny how GT is the only review site that said that the puzzles are "mere speed bumps" which means they are trying to make it sound bad, when the truth is that although people say it is not difficult, they say that it is just fun to figure out. Also the platforming sequences were referred to as fun by just about every other review site, but no, not for GT, apparently since its platforming its "unoriginal" not fun. And as far as hand to hand combat goes, your not supposed to have control over which move you pull off because this is not a fighting game, like Tekken or something, the fact is that you should be glad Drake pulls off different moves, just like in Gears, you have no control over your finishers or whatever you call them. Well you say the "game does nothing new gameplay-wise" but it does allot more gameplay-wise than gears, because the fact is that gears is not only "unoriginal" but also unvaried, its just cover and shooting. Whereas Uncharted 2 is cover, shooting, platforming, stealth, and puzzle solving. The fact is Uncharted 2 improves so much more on Uncharted 1, whereas Gears 2 changed next to nothing from Gears 1. Thus Uncharted 2 deserves a much higher score. I'm not saying that 9.3 is bad, i'm saying that according to how they review 360 games, such as gears, it is underrated.

  • Anon

Unless I am totally mistakes, are people really complaining that Uncharted 2 got a 9.3??? If the answer is 'yes', then you peeps are from a different planet than I.

U2 gets a near-perfect 9.3/10, so who the hell cares about a few tenths of an integer... Nobody is not going to buy a game just because it gets a score as low as 9.3, and those that really won't are just idiots imho.

Sit back and be glad that even a supposedly biased site gave U2 a superb score.

  • Justin

Again, how many times do we have to say it? It's not the score that's the problem. It's the inconsistency of the reviewer and the context of the review.

Seriously, how many times have people said it on this site, even. On the top, jazz even took the fu**ing liberty to TELL you people of what is in question here, and STILL you guy absolutely REFUSE to see that and think that we have a problem with just the final score. I even said that 9.3 isn't as bad as a 3.0. C'mon, people. I know we gamers are SMARTER than this.

Or maybe these are just 360 fanboys trying to diffuse truth.

  • Anon

I am clear on what this rant is about, and lets be honest, thats all this is, and I agree that gametrailers have been a bit suspect on numerous occasions.

My last sentence could have probably been clearer with the addition of, "No amount of whining or ranting in any article is going to change gametrailers' ways (a*suming bias), so sit back and be glad...".

I don't know about you, but I've been under the impression that all of this is, and has been, common knowledge for quite some time, especially to the kinds of people that fall across this site and N4G (imo). Hence my opinion of just take what you've got and don't whine needlessly.

  • James  - Gametrailers is biased

One of the most obvious case's showing Gametrailer's bias was in it's Game of the Year awards: for the best graphics award, it went to Call of Duty 4- even though in the Uncharted review, which they said had the best console graphics to date, came after the Call of Duty 4 review. Plus, even in the Uncharted 2 review, they said that the original Uncharted had the best console graphics ever. What were they thinking...

  • Justin

I read your comment on N4G about this article, and let me ask you a question, sir. Do you think the GT review was consistent with what they have said about it? You're a publisher here, so you should know to read what is said before you make any criticisms. If we were only complaining about the score, then there would be reason to be talking about how "fanboyish" I was to be talking about the review. But do you think GoW2 was innovative? What about sports games? What about Halo or GTA4? Did those bring any innovation? And what score did they receive from the same site that gave UC2 the 9.3?

If you really have a difference of opinion with me in that the reasoning behind the score was a correct a*sessment, say it (I'll be happy to hear it). But don't act like the rest of these 360 fanboy a*sholes and try to say it's just the score that is the issue here.

  • CDomingo

The award for most "stupid article on the net" goes to: this one.

  • Jim  - The pen is mightier than the sword

Dude, relax. If a game gets almost the highest score possible because of valid criticism layed out in the review the reviewer is biased.

You sound like a whiny whiny fanboi who doesn't respect the opinions of others.

Grow up! There's nothing wrong with the GameTrailers review.

  • Justin

And you're getting uptight about what, exactly? NOW you're complaining about complaining about people complaining.

We're angry that some people are failing to get the point of what we're discussing here. Now you're saying we shouldn't get upset about the ignorance of the people who won't read the article for ANYTHING?

I never got angry about anything in the review. Maybe you should read the article yourself before making a*sumptions.

  • Jim  - Opinions can't be criticized

"It's official. I get it. GameTrailers never liked the PS3." -> That's just an a*sumption without proof.

I really don't care how the review score was built because I believe (and don't know as well as you don't know how the score was built) that you can't criticize an opinion.

Criticizing an opinion is disrespecting that opinion.

And that's the fine difference I never said that this article is invalid and I never said is was written by a fanboi. I only have the impression that it was written by someone who is a fanbois. BIG DIFFERENCE.

And therefor my statement: Grow up, learn to respect others opinions and think about what you wrote here.

This article is nothing more than wild speculation IMHO. (see again I didn't say it IS speculation, only that it seems to me like speculation).

And if I'm misunderstanding this article than get your act together and explain it better so that there's no room for speculation.

  • Justin

Now, about what you said. Opinions are opinions, but you DO criticize opinion by merely disagreeing with them. You're saying that you find something wrong with one side by going to the other side. That's fine, because America was built on the foundation of free speech. And I never said that he wasn't entitled to those opinions. We're saying that if he's going to criticize one game for being unoriginal, get every other game that was never original and dock off points for them. Go back and revise the GTA4 review, or the GoW2 review. This guy never sees that, and some of the comments here failed to see that. You're failing to get that point, too.

If you're not going to dock off on other games on unoriginality, don't dock off this game, either.

  • Jim  - there are mechanism against double posting y'know

OK, I see your point about the whole "originality" thing. And I guess this point is valid. Halo 3 is not original in my book, although from a distance I think Halo 3: ODST tries new stuff. But Halo 3 was 2007.

Now is 2009 and the standards of the review change evolve. And I can give you clear example of how "unoriginal" Uncharted 2 can be - personally I don't mind this, but it's there.

Nathan looks like... a Henry Jones, the typical general character for an action game.

The scene where they chase the train -> literally hundreds of movies did this.

The story is similiar to the first part and many aspects.

    etc.etc.etc.

    --

But if it's well executed most people don't care about this "unoriginality" except reviewers whose job it is to nag about little things.

  • Tyler  - STUPID FANBOYS

Lol stupid Playstation fanboys love to b*tch about everything. GET OVER IT! your a bunch of whinny baby's! 9.3 is a good score! JUST SHUT THE f*ck UP!

  • Justin

From the very first paragraph of the article

    Quote:
"Yes, we know, 9.3/10 is a far, FAR cry from a 3/10. Not many games get that high of a score."

    You fail!

  • Anonymous

If you call someone a fanboy in a comment then sadly the post becomes utterly unintelligent.

  • Petro  - Title here:

I'm happy that other people have noticed same things as I have about Gametrailers reviews. I am quite happy that I read this article. Somebody should make poll about gaming sites and the gaming sites "preferred" console. Just ask people they know the best.

  • Robert  - Exactly

I agree with everything you said. There is nothing wrong with the score, but I watched the review (only once b/c of the aforementioned spoilers) and I was expecting the game to get something in the 9.5 to 10 range. I am a member of GT so I've also watched many other reviews and I have never heard so much emphasis put on originality in their previous reviews. It seemed that every other line included something about the game ripping-off other games. Shane Satterfield said during the Invisible Walls podcast that he reviewed the game himself. So maybe that's why there was somewhat of a discrepency in the content of the review, because he doesn't usually do the reviews. Either way, too many reviewers just use the fanboy defense as a cop-out rather than adding content and context to back up their criticism.

Oh, and are you guys accepting contributors? b/c I'm an out of work journalism student.

  • Joey  - Hmm

I for one believe that while Gears of War 2 may be better than UC2, these two games are in no way less of a masterpiece when compared to Metal Gear Solid 4 and GTA4 (Two most overhyped, overrated games of all time).

  • TruMan  - Stupid

Bla bla bla !! UC2 is awesome game.. you know it.. everyone know it.. so why the fcuking talk about the review score ??!! why PS3 people need high score that 360 ??!! so fanboy !! I have both and buy games that I like . who give a damm about score these days ?? One of my fav game is Kane & Lynch: Dead Men on 360... do u know what gamespot game.. only 6.0 !! I think that game deserve atleast 8.5.. thats jusy my opinion.. anyway.. wll buy UC2 on 13th.. stop nagging and stop reading these kind of stupid website who trying to milking this issue !! peace !!

  • Laughingman  - Good god

Good god this article reads like it was written by an angry 13 year old.

You call yourself a journalist? You jump from point to point without ever making it clear what on earth you're talking about, you use more or less totally irrelevant images completely at random and then have the balls to call out someone ELSE for being a bad journalist?

Here's a hint for you: Grow the f*ck up. Reviews are, and always have been subjective opinion pieces. You can disagree with them by all means, but they cannot be "wrong". So you think Uncharted 2 deserved a higher score? Review it yourself and give it one, but don't sit here on your small time blog b*tching about someone elses review and casting aspersions on their journalistic integrity and generally adding more crap to the already overfilled shitheap that is games journalism on the internet.

  • Anonymous  - Well done.

A very well thought out piece, sums up my own feelings about a very suspiciously argued review. It's all about his comment about a lack of originality putting a gla*s ceiling on a score that makes no sense - at all. I look forwards to Modern Warfare 2 getting 9.3 as well.

  • Mewshuji

    Good points, but...

Stopped reading at "Rachet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal"... >_> Yoshi's Island had it first. Get facts straight before ranting. ;))

  • Random Gamer  - Gaming

Its pretty disgusting how the gaming community has become. There is large controversy of how they are masking the medias loop holes and people are turning a blind eye. People are looking at the floor instead of paying attention to the details at hand. If this is whats happening to the community were in for a long ride.

This idiot doesn't even know how to cash a check. I'm surprised he even figured out how to roll out of bed and turn his computer on.

honeslty i think you owe gt an apology for writting something like this and making it public as a new story.

  • Klondike  - You're all idiots.

You're all idiots. Any game with any user input is a rip-off of pong.

  • blahblah

Gears 2 HORDE mode is nothing but Resident Evil's MERCENARY MODE.

Gears of War is heavily influenced by RE4. Keep in mind.

Halo 3 got a 9.8..despite being UNORIGINAL and more of the same **** shit. How do they justify that?

    Idiots

  • Wow :/  - How Sad...

ALL of you are idiots and a waste of time. How Sad!

  • Anonymous

This is neither important nor journalism.

  • Anonymous  - Yes...

It's pretty sad that most of the comments about this article are biased or ignorant. Get common sense, people. Please.

  • Teh Owner  - Sad

All I got to say is quit hating. f*ck what everyone says. Go buy uncharted 2 if you like the first.....So f*ck all you PS3 fanboys, 360 fanboys, and every last of yall. Go gamers!

  • yamum  - GT=xbots

    agree with you 100%.
as you said i could not care less what they gave uncharted 2, they could give it a 2/10 for all i care as long as they back up that it deserves that with facts not the usual BS.

they say uncharted 2 is not original and does nothing innovative.
well i have one question for them.

what game starts off with you in a train half way off a cliff with you starring at your death?

what game has a building collapse with YOU in it and you have to bolt and dive out the window?

what game has you on the side of a train with millions of enemies trying to kill you and your surroundings like trees poles and such are flying buy attempting to knock you off?

what game has a train carage explode and come flying towards you and just misses crushing you?

uncharted 2 is a action movie and thats the best part of the game.
from the first cutscene to the final one your heart is pounding.
its all 100% heart stopping action.
    what game does that?

i would agree with them in gameplay, as the cover shoot 3rd person thing has been done to death, and this kill 1 million enemies move 10 cm and kill 1 million more gets really annoying.

but to say uncharted 2 is not original is a complete load of BS.

there my only 3 gripes with uncharted 2.
1 as i said you kill 1 million enemies to move 10 cm than rinse and repeat.
2 gameplay and action enemies and such dont change much, your tactics to killing enemies dont change much leaving the gameplay boring.

3 the environments get a little repetitive, the puzzles are like each other theres a slight feel of havent i done this already.

so in fact i agree with their 9.3 well i would give it a 9.5, but 9.3 is fair, but their reasoning is not.

  • Andre Q

"It happened with Chris Buffa over his Metal Gear Solid 4 review over at GameDaily"

Yeah, but Chris Buffa's also an idiot who nobody likes.

  • JohnnyRacer  - Really?

The game is given a great score rabid PS3 fans are still pissy.

Both systems have great games. Deal with it.

Here, I 100% agree with Adam Sessler on this issue. Watch and learn.

  • Jim  - Did you see the Famitsu score?

9/9/9/10... surely they must be biased against Sony too?

    ;)

  • Anonymous  - omg

score is not the problem, the problem is the reasoning of the score. Read the damn article before commenting
