Delays can be a Good Thing PDF E-mail

Call me crazy, but sometimes I think there are too many good games to play, so a delay here and there isn't always such a bad thing. Of course it would be nice to pick and choose which games you want delayed and which ones you don't, but so is life.

For instance, I would rather have Splinter Cell: Conviction rather than Assassin's Creed II. This was probably a conscious decision by those at Ubisoft to line Assassin's Creed II up against Modern Warfare 2 in the hopes that--with them being different kinds of games--it wouldn't effect sales all that much. I know that Splinter Cell isn't really anything like Modern Warfare 2, but they both have guns so to some, they are the same kind of game. And by some, I mean marketing people who don't play video games.

There could also be some credence to the argument that since the Splinter Cell franchise has gone somewhat stale, it is a smart move delaying it until early next year where there is less stiff competition. On the other hand, Ubisoft may have been wise to either move up or push back the release of Assassin's Creed II because I think that Modern Warfare 2 will cut into their sales. However, the first Modern Warfare and the first Assassin's Creed were released within a week of each other and both sold very well.

When it comes to first-person shooters, I'd rather have BioShock 2 over Modern Warfare 2, but I can see why Take-Two decided against releasing it in the same season as the Infinity Ward juggernaut. In my opinion, the BioShock franchise brings a lot more innovation and freshness to the table than Modern Warfare 2, but let's face it, that game will probably sell even better than the first Modern Warfare and I predict that it will sell more than Grand Theft Auto IV.

Another game that may have fallen victim to the beast that is Modern Warfare 2 is the PS3 online shooter, MAG. From what I've seen this game is in need of some work, so the delay could be a good thing. It gives the developers time to add more polish to the audio and visuals and fine tune the gameplay, along with other aspects of the game.

There are some other games that weren't necessarily delayed, but were expected to be, or at least hoped to be, released in 2010. Chief among them are Mass Effect 2 and God of War III, both of which are due in the first quarter of 2010. Another good thing that comes with all these delays is that the holiday season won't be so cluttered and we'll have games to play throughout 2010. I say throughout because a lot of games are scheduled for the beginning of 2010, so I fully expect some games to be delayed even further.

... oh, and play Uncharted 2: Among Thieves if you haven't done so already.
