| During the Chet Faliszek-gate that transpired a few days ago, there was some controversy surrounding people that were condemning Chet for the disparaging and uncalled for comments about the PSN community. They were saying that he was taken "out of context", and that he was really only criticizing the service itself, not its users.
Well, here at Neocrisis (who, in our article on this matter, we took the quote word for word from what CVG made in their separate article), we want to make sure Chet has a fair shake, so here's the FULL line of questions that sparked the comments from him, and don't worry, we're did not leave out anything here (as they have now posted part two of this now historic interview). Keep in mind that any “taking out of context" of Chet's words were CVG's fault, not our own.
And so, here they are: Chet's comments:
Are you bored of people asking about PS3?
Faliszek: Nah. I bought a PS3 actually before I left for London because I wanted to play Uncharted 2. I borrowed a PS3 previously when I wanted to play games but this was the one that sold it to me.
So you know, we're gamers. We play on the PS3. Obviously if you look at the Orange Box we weren't so happy with our interaction with PS3 customers and what we could've done there. Right now for Left 4 Dead 2 we're looking at PC and 360 because the community aspects really fit the game - it's all about playing with your friends.
But that's the short term. What we're looking at for the long term... if it works out, it works out. Right now don't not buy it on the 360 because you think it's coming out on the PS3 - it's not going to. Right? It's coming out on the PC and 360. It's going to be exclusive for that. Again, it's the communities that those offer. For any other Valve game let's see - who knows. But for Left 4 Dead I think the community aspect of it...
So this is a decision very much made on a game by game basis - Valve's not blacklisting PS3?
Faliszek: Oh no. We own Wiis too right? So who knows. But definitely for Left 4 Dead, in hooking up with your friends and the community aspects, I think the Xbox 360 is head and shoulders above the PS3. The 360 and PC are on par, right?
The question before was about TF2 mod availability for 360 users, and the question after was about other projects Faliszek was working on.
But I'm sure you now see that we didn't take anything out of context. There was one thing left out of the CVG article that caused the outrage: that Faliszek loved Uncharted 2, bought a PS3 for it, and the “blacklisting" was on a game-by-game basis.
However, things still don't sit right. For one, it still does sound like Chet's using this as an excuse. There's really no reason he gives as to why XBL is, to him, a better online platform than PSN. Fine if he does think this, but give us a reason. Also, it's not really clear as to what he's blaming. The gamers are still in the crosshairs, because, even IN “context", it still sounds like the gamers are being blamed for not using the service enough. Read my previous article as to what I think about it. I still stand by my argument that the comments were uncalled for, though I do like that Chet also thinks Uncharted 2 is one of the best games ever (I won't let that waive my opinion of him as a true gamer in the gaming dev community).
Finally, he still gives no room for improvement. Usually, when a developer makes that kind of statement, they usually leave a window open in case the situation would improve enough for them to reconsider something that was previously impossible. Faliszek talks as if there's nothing Sony nor their gamers can even do about it. I've yet to see ANY dev do anything like that, and that alone makes this more of an excuse to me. Maybe if he said “if Sony were to find a way to improve the platform to where it would be desirable for us, there could be a possibility." But he seems annoyed at the fact that the PSN EXISTS, with no way to make Chet change his mind on the matter.
And he said that he isn't sick of hearing about the PS3. May I remind you about the Valve PS3 campaign I opened up when this story broke.
What bothers me about the “being taken out of context" allegation was, for one, I tried my best to INCLUDE the context as it came from the CVG article. Keep in mind that, before part two of the actual interview came out, the separate article that highlighted Chet's feelings on XBL vs. PSN was the only context we had to go on. Hard to include the context when it's not even presented to you. I included the entire quotes, word for word, on my response to this.
Yes, I have read the responses to the people who highlighted this issue (and yes, Examiner guy, you ARE a complete douchebag that didn't get it). Keep in mind that it is my duty as a journalist to make sure that you are given ALL the facts before the opinion is made. I am not going to be here to just get hits. Yes, it is good that we do get them from the articles I made, and yes, I do get the blunt of the criticism about it because I'm extremely outspoken and don't hold anything back. My opinions have gotten me in trouble on more than one occasion. I do feel extremely privileged that I get the responses, both positive and negative, that I get. Shows me that people care.
However, that being said, and being said that the submission of my articles on N4G are those I hope get read by a lot of people, the purpose of these articles, like this one was, is not to get hits and get ad revenue. When I make an article, you can take to the bank that the person who wrote it truly believes that what he writes is the truth. I don't say that I dislike Valve's opinions because I think it'll attract people to view Neocrisis. I don't write articles so those crooked idiots that make Evony can show you some T&A. I write it because I truly do not like the way Valve is acting like babies. I truly want Microsoft to fix their 360 situation, I want for you to be informed about how rebates work, or when the press gets it wrong. I call people out by name because I do believe that they need to be because they are doing the wrong thing. I don't care that some people disagree. Hell, it's an opinion. I know people won't always agree with me (don't act like you need to still pass kindergarten when you speak, though).
Reason why I digress? To say that when I made my thoughts known, I wasn't trying to take Chet out of context (he wasn't). If you really want to blame someone for taking Chet's comments out of context, blame CVG. Not Neocrisis, not PushSquare, no one but CVG.
In fact, go to Chet himself and ask him why he's not foaming at the mouth about CVG taking him out of context. You'd think that if he thought he was, he would be the FIRST one to scream foul, yet, I don't see him in any hurry to correct CVG on their article that caused such an uproar.
Makes you wonder if that was what he wanted to say all along, doesn't it?
