An Open Letter To RPG Developers PDF Print E-mail

My friend and I have talked about this idea for the last 7 years. We always thought it would be cool if RPG's like Final Fantasy, Disgaea, etc... would allow you to go online with your party and fight it out with another person's party. In all actuality, we've been discussing this for so long that our original idea was to allow you to load up the game data from two different memory cards, and then have the option on the main menu to go into battle mode. Seriously, why hasn't this been done. In an age where every game is finding some way of utilizing the internet to enhance gameplay (even Ninja Gaiden and DMC4 display rankings), RPG's have been left behind. You either play it all online, or you don't get the opportunity to engage in some friendly combat.

Now some might argue that this is enough, and if you wanted to fight with others you would go online with an MMORPG and do it, but I strongly disagree for several reasons. One, most of those games cost a monthly subscription fee. Now whether you're too broke or simply refuse to pay for a game every month, that is a serious deterrent to a lot of gamers. That's coupled with the fact that some people don't like having to rely on other people to get the task done, and it can also be a hassle to get a party formed when none of your buddies are online or you're just starting up. Lastly, just because you bought a single player RPG doesn't mean you're anti-social or you hate the internet. It just means you bought a game you thought was quality enough to fork over the cash for.

RPG's with great battle systems, especially those with complex nuances that allow for extra strategy, would make for fantastic online competition. Of course, strategy RPG's would naturally make for a high caliber intellectual competition. Bottom line, I think this would be downright fun. Not to mention you and your buddies could finally settle the score over whose Armor/Materia combination was the most deadly

So if this reaches any developers, I hope you consider this. And to all of you reading this, please add in any suggestions or comments you may have. If you don't like this idea, if it's been done before and I'm not aware of it, or for any other reason you feel I need to be chastised, please post as well. I welcome any and all feedback.
