Konami's back in top form!...
We all know the story of Pro Evo Soccer series and FIFA, it's a bit like a cat and mouse game. PES took the lead from the days of the PS2 and was pretty much unstoppable. EA pitted its FIFA brand and year upon year started to improve gradually until it eventually surpassed PES in recent years. Konami realised this slowly and eventually took note of its competitior. They have really have gone to town by listening to ex-fans and loyal fans of the series and what we have now in its latest and current form is very impressive indeed to say the least.
Controls have been upped with tighter precision of turns and movement all round is greatly improved. What I particularly like about it now is the A.I of the players you come across they act just as real life footballers would and the mistakes they make, each individuals characteristic has been captured perfectly - they all react according to how you play naturally. Goalkeeping A.I has also been improved, no more using sweetspots and such to score, much more skill is involved and yes, it can be quite tough at the start but this is what football is really about, earning your way to glory by playing well and thinking ahead with its many different strategic combinations and formations offered.
Another factor is the fact that with all PES titles, is the fact that you feel in control of the game, other titles of the genre feel somewhat scripted and such and you feel as if you don't really have much of control and just hope for the best!
Graphically, it's a big improvement compared to its the previous years, with a load of new animations and smoother fluidity of moves and 360 degree control really makes the diffrence.
Soundwise is a major improvement too with authentic crown chants to boot. New camera angles have also been implemented and they work very well too, from your standard view to the more realistic angles such as tv broadcasting and such, it makes the the title that much more convincing and satisfying to play as well as just being a spectator of the game.
Overall: With its many different leagues and modes to choose from as well as online play, PES'11 is back with a big grin on its face. Konami have listened to its fans of how and what it should have been and now have created the best soccer title to date. PES is back on top of the premier league and hopefully will be there for a while to come!...
+ Excellent new animations and graphics
+ Great stadium effects and cool music
+ Many varied and challenging modes
+ Improved online play
+ Controls are tighter and more flexible
+ Excellent A.I.
- Can be a bit daunting for new fans of the genre, but it's worth finding the time to learn the 'beautiful game'
I haven't really played any soccer titles on handheld, last one I played was quite a while ago. Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 on the 3DS shows how a soccer title should be made.
Graphically, the player models are animated nicely along with convincing ball physics. In 3D, the effects are well done - although you may want to change the camera view of the game as the default camera by shows the players you control from a over-the-shoulder perspective, this view unfortunately doesn't really work in the long run as the view is obscured when you are defending which makes it difficult to track the ball.
Soundwise, the music and sound effects are well done, along with crowd cheers and chants, it's as if you are in the match. Gameplay-wise, the game is easy to get into with adjustable control schemes. There are a fair number of modes to choose from Champions league and such - it will take a while to get through it all, there's plenty of replayability here.
PES'11 is a well rounded soccer title that does well in 2D as well as in 3D. Well worth a kick or two!...
+ Good animation of players
+ 3D effects are well done
+ Lots of modes to choose from
+ Good sound effects
+ Easy to control
- Not everyone likes soccer
- No proper head-to-head online mode
